SRCC(Snake Rescue & Conservation Center) is the first of its kind in Bangladesh. Its a programme that started its journey by the name COBRA FRIEND's CLUB & it was started by Md. Borhan Biswas Romon with the help of Md. Shahidur Rahman,a master snake wrangler and Md. Mehedi Hasan GM in the village of Dhormohata in Paba, Rajshah in 2009. Later Sharker Shams Bin Sharif (Shuvo) and Asif Faisal Shakik joined the club and together as advisers. It was renamed to SNAKE RESCUE AND CONSERVATION CENTRE later in 2010.
The non profit organisation is not a registered organisation but it has rescued around 200 snakes from homes and poachers. These snakes are housed in a scientifically built environment where they are fed and taken care of until they could be released in captivity. It is also the first programme in Bangladesh that has successfully bred and produced healthy cobras in captivity with a success rate of 97% . The rescue and conservation centre also runs awareness programmes among the masses of Bangladesh. This awareness programme has seen much success over the years, it has not only saved hundreds of lives but also has helped build up small groups of aware people in villages and far away places who themselves run the snake awareness programme, Just a recent figure shows that before the awareness programme 15 to 20 people used to die from snake bite every month in Paba upazilla alone! But in 2010 the number has come down to only accidental deaths of 1-2 a year . Now the number has been in the nil figure for about a year. Schools colleges all over Bangladesh has seen and learned of the snake's importance in the environment. Where people used to kill people at first sight they are taught to call the centre to pick up the snakes thus saving both the lives of man and the snake. Anyone can be a member of a snake study club which requires a one time fee of taka five hundred (7usd) and learn about the snakes first hands. We need the support of people and funding to continue as it is expensive to run a project like this. Sadly there is no other way to save snakes in Bangladesh without our programme as there are so little amount of protected forests in our country. The organization is the first and only organization of its kind in Bangladesh. And if it can manage to get permission to extract snake venom which is very valuable, then thousands of snake charmers can earn a healthy amount of money by collecting venom and they would not need to defang the snakes any more. |
